Fibroid Treatment in Surrey

Expert care from Mr Sumit Kar, FRCOG, MRCOG, MD (Obs & Gynae), MBBS

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb (uterus). They are extremely common, affecting up to 80% of women by age 50, though many women have no symptoms at all. When fibroids do cause problems, they can significantly impact quality of life. As a Consultant Gynaecologist with over 25 years of experience and a Diploma in Gynaecological Endoscopy, Mr Sumit Kar provides comprehensive fibroid assessment and treatment. His expertise in minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic techniques means many fibroids can be treated with keyhole surgery, resulting in smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery.

Symptoms

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) - the most common symptom
  • Prolonged periods lasting more than a week
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Constipation or bloating
  • Backache or leg pains
  • Abdominal swelling - sometimes mistaken for weight gain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Fertility problems in some cases

Diagnosis

  • 1Detailed medical history and symptom assessment
  • 2Pelvic examination to feel for enlarged uterus
  • 3Transvaginal ultrasound scan - the primary imaging tool for fibroids
  • 4MRI scan for detailed mapping before surgery
  • 5Hysteroscopy to assess fibroids inside the uterine cavity
  • 6Blood tests to check for anaemia from heavy bleeding

Treatment Options

Watchful Waiting

Small fibroids causing no symptoms may simply be monitored. Fibroids often shrink after menopause when hormone levels decrease.

Medical Management

Medications including tranexamic acid, hormonal treatments, or GnRH analogues can help control symptoms. The Mirena coil is effective for managing heavy bleeding associated with fibroids.

Myomectomy

Surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus. This can be performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), hysteroscopically (through the cervix), or as open surgery depending on fibroid size and location. Ideal for women wishing to preserve fertility.

Uterine Artery Embolisation

A radiological procedure that blocks blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink. Performed by interventional radiologists.

Hysterectomy

Removal of the uterus provides a definitive cure for fibroids. Can often be performed laparoscopically with Mr Kar's expertise in minimally invasive surgery, resulting in faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

What to Expect

During your initial consultation, Mr Kar will take a detailed history of your symptoms, including their impact on your daily life. A pelvic examination and ultrasound scan are usually performed during the first appointment to assess the size, number, and location of any fibroids. Mr Kar will explain all your treatment options clearly, discussing the benefits and risks of each approach in relation to your specific situation. If you're considering pregnancy, this will be an important factor in planning treatment. If surgery is recommended, Mr Kar will explain the procedure in detail, including what to expect before, during, and after the operation. His expertise in minimally invasive techniques means laparoscopic surgery is often possible, offering faster recovery and smaller scars. Treatment is always tailored to your individual circumstances, taking into account your symptoms, fibroid characteristics, fertility wishes, and personal preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths made of muscle and fibrous tissue. They are not dangerous and very rarely become cancerous (less than 1 in 1000). However, they can cause significant symptoms that affect quality of life and may require treatment.
Most fibroids don't affect fertility, but those that distort the uterine cavity or block the fallopian tubes can make it harder to conceive or increase miscarriage risk. A myomectomy to remove these fibroids can improve fertility outcomes.
After myomectomy, there is approximately a 25-30% chance of fibroids recurring over 5-10 years. The only definitive cure is hysterectomy. Fibroids naturally shrink after menopause due to reduced hormone levels.
Laparoscopic myomectomy is keyhole surgery to remove fibroids through small incisions in the abdomen. Mr Kar has specialist training in this technique, which offers benefits including smaller scars, less post-operative pain, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.
Recovery depends on the type of surgery. After laparoscopic myomectomy, most women return to normal activities within 2-4 weeks. Hysteroscopic removal of fibroids has the quickest recovery, often just a few days. Open surgery typically requires 4-6 weeks recovery.
Not all fibroids require surgery. Treatment depends on symptoms, fibroid size and location, your age, and whether you want to preserve fertility. Many women manage well with medical treatment or watchful waiting. Surgery is considered when symptoms significantly impact quality of life or don't respond to other treatments.
